Matthew 9:27-35
After healing the woman with the issue of blood and after raising the daughter of Jairus from death, as Jesus was walking, a blind man followed him. He called out to Jesus saying, “Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.”
He called Jesus “Son of David” because his mother Mary, and Joseph, who raised him as his son, were both descendants of David, the one who slew Goliath and later became King of Israel. If Israel had not been ruled by Caesar and the Roman Empire, Jesus would have been royalty in Israel.
Jesus went into a house and the blind man followed. Jesus asked him, “Believe ye that I am able to do this?” And he said to him, “Yea, Lord.”
Then Jesus touched his eyes and said, “According to your faith, be it unto you.” And he was healed from the blindness.
Jesus asked them not to tell people about this, but he told many people and Jesus became even more famous.
Jesus continued going about, teaching his gospel and healing, as the Bible says, “every sickness and every disease among the people.” Many people believed his teachings. He was getting more and more followers.
What do you think?
- Although Jesus could have been royalty in Israel, do you think it was important to him for people to treat him like a king?
- Sometimes we say Jesus is King of Kings; why is that?
- Why would Jesus ask the men not to tell people about healing them?
- Is it important to be humble? Do you think it is difficult to do great work and still be humble? How was Jesus able to be great and also be humble?
